The Existential Approach is informed by philosophical study and thought, made famous by philosophers such as Sartre, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Kierkegaard and Frankl. A non-dogmatic methodology, it allows for subjective analysis through experience, meaning and making sense of the world that we live in. Although there are fundamental differences between Psychotherapy and Coaching, the common theme underlying this approach is that each client is welcomed as a person with their own values, expectations, history and sense of what is right or wrong for them. This means that I can work with people across a vast spectrum of culture, career and life experiences, religion and value systems, whilst appreciating that each individual has the capacity to find their own way forward in life. My role is to facilitate your direction and choice, rather than direct you and make choices for you. The feedback I have received suggests that clients feel as if they are taking responsibility for their own life through this process, finding contentment in the knowledge that they are creating the framework for the design of their own existence.

Always in the background of our work is the knowledge that we are human beings embedded in a complex world of choice and change - in fact, we are constantly in flux ourselves. Rather than impose ideology and truth, each client is given the support to find their own meaning, create their own concepts and goals and create a space together that feels comfortable and safe. As an embodied being, all aspects of phenomenological experience, feeling and emotion will be open for discussion, in addition to dreams and innermost thoughts. You must be prepared to be honest and open, to share perhaps even your most vulnerable feelings and be open to tough challenge as well as support.
